Hoi An full-moon lantern nights

Once a lunar month, on the 14th day, Hoi An's old town switches off its electric lights and runs on lanterns and candles. The night is regular enough to plan a trip around, and specific enough that it is easy to get wrong by a day. Here are the dates, what happens, and when the river gets in the way.

Dates are the 14th day of each lunar month, calculated by us for Vietnamese time and cross-checked against published calendars; an independent travel website gives the same date, 22 November, for November 2026 and notes that some other sites wrongly give 24 November. There is no leap month in 2027.

Why the 14th and not the full moon

The lantern night is held on the 14th day of the lunar month, the evening before the 15th, which is the traditional full-moon day. The astronomical full moon can fall on the 14th, 15th or 16th, so the moon on the night may look full or nearly full. The point for planning is that a full-moon calendar app will often give the wrong evening. Use the 14th lunar day.

What happens on the night

From early evening the old town takes on its lantern-night form. According to the Vietnam Airlines travel guide, electric lighting is switched off by about 20:00, especially around the Hoai River and the Japanese Covered Bridge, leaving the streets to paper lanterns. Visitors float small flower lanterns on the river, there are folk performances including bai choi, a call-and-response singing game, and vehicle traffic is restricted.

Roads into the old town close to vehicles at around 18:00, so arrive on foot or by bicycle and early. Lanterns for the river are sold for roughly VND 50,000 to 200,000, and bargaining is normal. The riverbanks near the bridges are the most crowded places on the night; side streets a few blocks away are much quieter.

The old town ticket

Since 15 May 2023 all visitors to the Hoi An Ancient Town need a ticket. The Da Nang tourism portal lists the 2026 price as VND 120,000 for international visitors, VND 80,000 for Vietnamese visitors, VND 50,000 for children between 1 and 1.4 metres, and free under 1 metre, with ticketing hours of 08:00 to 17:00. The portal says prices are for reference and may change.

Hoi An itself has changed status: since July 2025 Quang Nam province has been merged into Da Nang city, and the old town sits in Hoi An ward of Da Nang.

The flood months

Hoi An is rainy from September to January, and the UK Foreign Office notes seasonal flooding in central Vietnam in October and November. The old town is built on the river, and in a heavy flood the water rises into the streets. In those months the lantern night may be called off at short notice; one travel website notes that November is the peak flood-risk month and that the November 2026 night could be cancelled.

From February to August the town is dry and warm to hot. The February to April nights are the most comfortable; June to August nights are hot but dependable.

Planning around a lantern night

  • Stay two nights, with the lantern night as the second. If weather or crowds spoil the evening, you can still see the old town the next morning.
  • Check the weekday in the table: a lantern night that falls on a Saturday or Sunday adds weekend visitors to the usual crowd.
  • In February 2027 the lantern night is on 19 February, two weeks after Tet; expect the old town to be busy with domestic visitors.
  • If your date is in October or November, book refundable rooms and decide two or three days ahead based on the forecast.

Note that lanterns are hung in the old town every evening, not only on the 14th. On ordinary nights the electric lights stay on and traffic is not restricted, but the streets are still lit with lanterns.

Who should skip the lantern night

  • Travellers who dislike dense crowds on narrow riverside streets.
  • Anyone who cannot walk some distance: vehicles are kept out of the centre in the evening.
  • People who need a fixed date in the flood months and cannot afford a cancelled evening.
