Nature seasons

Harvests, blossom and fireflies

Nature does not publish dates. The rice on the terraces, the buckwheat on the karst plateau and the fireflies in the forest each have a window of a few weeks that shifts with the weather. This page gives the windows that official and local sources reported for 2026, and how to plan a trip that still works if you miss the peak.

Our reading of the 2026 reports: filled = reported peak, half = start or end of the window or workable with risk, empty = outside the season. Windows move by one to three weeks from year to year.

Rice harvest in the north-west

Mu Cang Chai's terraces spread over more than 2,300 hectares at about 1,000 metres, and 500 hectares were recognised as a national landscape on 18 October 2007. The rice ripens and turns gold in September and October, concentrated in the communes of La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh. Since July 2025 the area belongs to Lao Cai province, after Yen Bai was merged into it.

Ripening moves through the district in stages. For 2026, Dan Tri reported that Tu Le valley and the villages at the foot of the Khau Pha pass, around Lim Mong, Lim Thai and Cao Pha, were richest from mid-August to early September, while La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh were usually most colourful from mid-September to mid-October. The full season lasts about two months. In Tu Le, the young sticky rice is also made into com, green rice flakes, in August and September.

Events cluster around it. The 2026 paragliding festival over the golden season opened at the Khau Pha landing site on 30 August, and the Golden Season Festival ran from 30 August into October with flute contests, costume displays, a market and a trail race. Mu Cang Chai is about 300 to 350 km from Hanoi.

Fields are cut as soon as they ripen, so the gold lasts only days on any one terrace.

Timing a rice trip

  • The gold on a given terrace lasts days, not weeks; once it is cut it is stubble. Aim for the start of the local window, not the end.
  • Late August and early September favour Tu Le and Khau Pha; mid-September to early October favours La Pan Tan and the higher communes.
  • The 2 September National Day holiday brings domestic visitors to the area; expect full guesthouses.
  • Mountain roads in this season can be cut by landslides after heavy rain; build in a spare day.

Buckwheat on the Dong Van karst plateau

Buckwheat, tam giac mach, is grown on the high karst of the far north, in what was Ha Giang province and since July 2025 is part of Tuyen Quang province. It flowers pink and white from October to December. For 2026 the province planted around 400 hectares in three batches so the flowering would be staggered, and by mid-October flowers were reported open around Pho Bang, Hoang Su Phi, Xin Man, Pho Cao, Sung La, Dong Van, Lung Cu and Ma Le, with peak bloom expected in late October and October and November described as the most vivid months.

The 12th buckwheat flower festival was announced in August for 6 November and was later reported as opening on 25 October 2026 at Youth Square in Dong Van. Part of the area is planted with visitors in mind, in staggered batches; elsewhere buckwheat is a farm crop, so walk on paths and ask before entering a field. The plateau sits within the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, and its roads are steep and narrow.

Terraced rice fields ripple across steep hillsides surrounded by dense forest in Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang.

Fireflies and butterflies in Cuc Phuong

Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh province has a firefly season from late April to early May, when the forest fills with fireflies in the evening. The park began evening tours in May 2024: 19:00 to 22:00, about an hour to an hour and a half per tour along a 5 km route by electric car, with around 100 visitors per session and reported prices of VND 100,000 for adults and VND 50,000 for children. Besides fireflies, visitors look for nocturnal animals with torches.

The butterfly season usually runs from late April to June and peaks around the 30 April and 1 May holidays. In 2026 the butterflies arrived two to three weeks early, in early April, and the park drew tens of thousands of visitors on peak days. Park staff ask visitors not to disturb wildlife: walk gently and speak softly.

Monsoon waterfalls

Waterfalls across the region are at their fullest in the wet months, from roughly June to October. That is also when they are most dangerous. The UK Foreign Office warns that in Thailand lakes, caves and waterfalls are particularly at risk of dangerous flash flooding, and that heavy rain can cause landslides in northern and mountainous areas. In Vietnam it notes swollen rivers in mountain areas and roads blocked by landslides during floods.

  • Look, but do not swim below a waterfall after heavy rain upstream.
  • Check whether a park or falls is open after a storm; some close access paths.
  • The water is often brown in full flood. The clear turquoise of photographs is a dry-season look.
  • Leave daylight for the drive back on mountain roads.

Who should skip a nature-timed trip

  • Anyone who needs certainty: nature windows move, and a cold spell or heavy rain can shift them by weeks.
  • Travellers who dislike long mountain drives: the rice and buckwheat areas are a full day's road from Hanoi.
  • People who want quiet: national holidays bring the largest crowds to every one of these places.
